Children's Bible Study

This is a great time to be a kid at LSCC! Just as Jesus welcomed and called for the children to come to him (Matt. 19:14), we also welcome children into the life of our congregation. We are serious about raising the next generation of God’s people, and are continuing to seek the best ways to create safe and joyful spaces for all of God’s children to experience Christ’s love and grow in faith.

NURSERY
Nursery care is available during all Sunday morning worship services and programs. With a minimum of two trained child care providers in each room and a pager system to assist parents, families are free to enjoy the many opportunities for faith enrichment on Sunday mornings.

8 AM- Nursery available for infants-3 years (Rm 227)
9 AM– Nursery available for infants-3 years (Rm 227 & 203)
10 AM– Nursery available for infants-1 year (Rm 227 & 203)
Toddlers engage in our education hour (Sunday School)
11 AM– Nursery available for infants-3 years (Rm 227 & 203)

CHILDREN’S DISCIPLESHIP HOUR (Sunday School)
Our education model celebrates children’s different learning styles through engaging children in centers/stations such as storytelling, drama, art, music, games/action, technology, and science.
Children will learn one Bible story or Biblical theme for several weeks, while a different center
or workshop rotates to their class each week. They will experience one story or theme through
several different avenues in a fun and interactive setting.

CHILDREN IN WORSHIP
Children are an important part of the entire community of faith. It is important for children to be welcomed, accepted, greeted, and integrated into the life and mission of the church in order to strengthen their faith development. This teaches children that they are truly valued and part of the community. Children learn best by modeling. Seeing parents, Sunday school teachers, and significant mentors worshipping together is a key in developing their own sense of awe and wonder for worship and the mysteries of God.

During the 9:00 & 11:00 worship services, children will begin worship with their families (or friends). All children are invited to come forward to the steps for a Children’s Moment, usually a story or object lesson related to the day’s scripture. Children of appropriate ages are then invited to exit with adult leaders to Godly Play (9 & 11 worship times) or WOW (9 worship only). See below for explanations of Godly Play and WOW
* Parents are asked to check their children in for these offerings before worship begins (we have two stations-one in the education wing & one near the sanctuary). After worship, parents may pick up their children in the education wing.

Tips for Parents in Worship
• Visit the restroom with your child before worship
• Make sure to pick up a Children’s Bulletin (children learn best when their hands are busy)
• Introduce your children to ushers/greeters and people sitting near you (this includes your child and makes them feel important)
• Sit where your children can see
• Mark the pages of the hymns and/or scripture
• Encourage your child to stand when the congregation stands (this encourages participation and stretches muscles)
• A coin offering teaches sharing. When the offering plate is passed, let your child put money in and pass it to the next person. Set the example of giving by always placing something in the offering plate yourself. Offering is often a favorite part of worship for children-they can be active and participate in giving.
• Encourage your children to look and listen for something in the service to ask you a question about afterwards

GODLY PLAY
(ages 4 years-1st grade)
Godly Play offers a creative, child-honoring way of entering into and experiencing the biblical
story. The scriptures are presented in three dimensional hands-on story boxes. In Godly Play,
we play with the language of God and God’s People: our sacred stories, parables, liturgical actions
and silence. Through this powerful language, through our wondering, through the community
of players gathered together, we hear the deepest invitation of all: an invitation to come
play with God. Worship in Godly Play follows a similar flow to that of our congregational order
of worship, with the goals of both providing our children a special place to worship and encounter
God, and of better preparing them for participation in worship as a part of the congregation.
We are currently taking steps to implement Godly Play, and will have it in full swing this Fall.
For now, our children encounter God in Children’s Church by experiencing and interacting with
Bible stories using children’s worship resources.

WOW (Wonders of Worship)
(optional for grades 2-5)
This is our newest offering for children, and is optional for upper-elementary
children attending the 9:00 worship. WOW is a transitional program that will
only be offered a few times a year, and is designed to help older children experience
worship as a truly enriching part of their spiritual growth. Our goal is that
our children & families will experience the power of worshipping together and
with the whole church. This offering will help participants explore the meaning
of worship elements and discover ways to share their praise to God through acts of worship.
Again, our goal is to transition children into participating in corporate worship.

Here is our schedule for the Fall:
WOW will be offered: Sept. 16, 23, 30; Oct. 7, 14, 21
Children will sit and share in worship: Oct. 28 and Nov. 4
WOW will be offered: Nov. 11, 18, 25; Dec. 2
Children will share in worship: Dec. 9, 16, 23, & 30

SAFE SPACES: Guidelines for a Shalom Community
We are committed to providing a safe and secure environment to promote the spiritual and social development of children and youth and will strive to prevent any abuse or infringement of safety. Recognizing the reality of the world we live in and embracing the love we have for children, we have recently implemented policies and procedures to further ensure “Safe Spaces” for everyone.
• These guidelines include the check-in system for children—parents/guardians check their children into Sunday School/Godly Play and receive a numbered card that signifies they are the only people allowed to pick up the child.
• We also do background checks and training for our adult volunteers to make sure we have the most qualified and equipped people serving with your children
.
